about

This is not an official Burden album release so do not add it to Metal-Archives or elsewhere. This is a series of audio clips displaying various guitar tones from different combinations of gear.

Pedals used includes a MIJ Boss HM-2, a MIT Boss HM-2, and a Boss FZ-2. The amp used is a Soldano SLO preamp with a cab sim running directly out to the interface. The guitar is an Ibanez RG7321 in standard 7 string tuning. Settings for all pedals are gain, high, and low maxed and volume at approximately unison with the amp though there may be small discrepancies in overall volume between clips. No post processing was done other than raising volume approximately 16 dB for all clips (all clips were raised by the same amount). The amp settings are 4 for bass, 6 for mids, and 6 for treble.

The first six clips are played through the "clean" channel of the amp which is still slightly overdriven. The preamp does not have a true clean channel so the clean channel is the gain channel with the gain turned almost all the way down. The first clip shows demonstrates how this sounds. The clips are all well labeled so you should be able to tell what is what. The other seven are played through the "dirty" channel of the amp with max gain to give an idea of how the pedals sound through a dirty amp if that is your thing.

I wanted to use an MIJ and MIT HM-2 side-by-side because there is a long-persisting myth that there is a significant difference in tone between MIJ and MIT but this false and any difference between individual HM-2s is due to varying values of components and so all HM-2s have slight variation in sound but there is no direct correlation between country of origin and sound. Both will get you the Swedish death metal sound if that's what you want. I have included audio of both HM-2s on at the same time.

The FZ-2 is a clone of the old 60s Univox Super Fuzz and features three different modes. Mode I is a mid-boosted fuzz. Pete Townsend used this mode on the Super Fuzz. Mode II is mid-scooped and was used by Jus Oborn of Electric Wizard so the tone is very reminiscent of the Dopethrone album. Mode III is a clean boost that was not featured on the original Super Fuzz. I used Mode III with the dirty amp but I did not think that there was much point in testing it out with a clean amp since clean boosts through clean amps is not really a recipe for good metal tone.

All audio uses the same riff however I played it for each clip rather than using a looper so this is a variable but I don't think that it's too significant. The riff is played once with power chords and a second time with palm-muted, single note tremolo picking to give you an idea of how both of these sound. I will consider doing future tests with the same equipment with lead guitar riffs although I do think that these pedals are much better for rhythm tone than lead tone. I may also do a test with the same pedals with a bass guitar.

about

Burden Connecticut

Steeped in a world of its own mythology, mysticism, and folklore, Burden is a dark metal band incorporating elements of black metal, doom, and folk with an emphasis on melody. Blast beats and tremolo picked riffs bring to mind the likes of Windir and Mithotyn while heavier songs dredge jackhammer riffs from the deepest depths of doom, all while soaring keyboard and accordion leads spiral above. ... more
